MORE Program

CityMusic Columbus endeavors to empower Columbus youth by offering a variety of educational and outreach opportunities that are focused on music and music education. The current program is our Head Start Music and Learning - a partnership with the Columbus YMCA Head Start and the PNC Foundation.

The Musical Opportunities Reward Everyone (MORE) program got its start in 1991, when legendary folk singer Odetta presented a music workshop for students in Weinland Park, an inner-city community with a sizable at-risk population. Then CityMusic Artistic Director, Steve Rosenberg, remembers the inaugural event:
"Odetta treated everyone with great respect. While in front of the students, she was such a dynamic and engaging presence that she held the kids in rapt attention. It was truly inspirational and after that I knew CityMusic would continue to present music in under-served schools."
Shortly after that first MORE workshop, CityMusic established a partnership with the Godman Guild, a United Way Agency that has served the Short North area of Columbus since the 1800s. CityMusic has worked closely with the Godman Guild to present a wide range of music workshops to youth at the Godman Guild, Weinland Park Elementary, The Arts Impact Middle School, and the Northland High School.

Most recently, CityMusic and Godman Guild have partnered to present the Summer Youth Empowerment Program, an eight week summer camp for Weinland Park youth ages 5-18, held at Camp Mary Orton. SYEP is focused on keeping children engaged in nature-based learning and adventure activities throughout the summer, providing social skill development and hands-on educational activities.
