Head Start Music & Learning
The Head Start Music and Learning initiative began in the fall of 2015 with the mission to add music education to early childhood development in Head Start classrooms. CityMusic, the PNC Foundation, and the Greater Columbus Arts Council have partnered to bring programing to five YMCA Head Start locations: Vaughn Hairston, Norton Road, Cherry Creek, Watkins, and now, Future Scholars.
Early childhood development experts Mimi Chenfeld and Joanie Calem lead the program, incorporating music and movement with every aspect of the Head Start curriculum. Students enjoy a gentle introduction to the fun of music through simple folk songs and poems for language development, finger-plays for fine motor development, movement songs for free movement play, rhythm instruments for rhythm development, and creative movement to instrumental music. All activities encourage children to learn, have fun, move, and explore!
